The pieces are, technically speaking, a speaker, music sampler, and light omitting vase. All three pieces are working together in harmony, responding to and reacting with one another.
Each section of the music sampler (melodies, drums, vocal samples, atmosphere) has between ten and twenty self-produced samples for the user to craft their own unique soundscapes.
The two knobs affect volume and BPM. As the playback speed is turned down, the vase omits a slow, pulsating orange glow. As the BPM is turned up, the light begins to flash faster and more sporadically, shining a harsh white light.
The speaker was designed with sound quality in mind, and was built specifically for these MK speaker drivers; extensive rounds of research, development, & prototyping were crucial for obtaining optimal audio quality. The interior of the vessel, although hidden, is filled with a crackling lava glaze to improve acoustics.
The pieces were installed in the LVK theater at the University of Oregon for my senior exhibition showcase. using theater curtains, a tent, and a custom built pedestal, I put this piece on display for hundreds of patrons at the University.
This relationship between the objects, auditory experience, lighting, and installation allowed audience members to interact with the piece in a truly individual way, as no two users experienced the same narrative. This focus on emotion and intuition is crucial not only to this work, but my entire practice.
